Tracheostomy: Dysphagia Assessment and Management – Adult Population: Workshop

Date : Feb 25, 2026

The faculty of the Unit of Speech Language Pathology underwent a one-day workshop titled “Tracheostomy: Dysphagia Assessment and Management – Adult Population” on 21st February 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Father Muller College.

The workshop was designed to enhance clinical knowledge and practical skills in the assessment and management of dysphagia in adults with tracheostomy. The sessions commenced at 9:00 a.m. with a detailed overview of tracheostomy anatomy and physiology, including indications and various types of tracheostomies. This was followed by discussions on the challenges associated with tracheostomy, particularly in relation to swallowing function.

The resource person for the workshop was Ms. Arya C. J., Assistant Professor from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, who delivered comprehensive and clinically relevant sessions throughout the day.

Post tea break, the sessions continued with further exploration of swallowing challenges in tracheostomized patients. A comprehensive session on interdisciplinary collaboration in ICU and post-acute care settings was conducted, with special emphasis on Oncology and Neurology populations.

The afternoon sessions focused on clinical application. Faculty members were oriented to clinical bedside evaluation procedures, instrumental assessments including FEES and VFSS in tracheostomy, and evidence-based practices (EBP) in dysphagia management and decannulation protocols.

The workshop concluded with an open and case-based discussion, allowing participants to clarify doubts and integrate theoretical knowledge with clinical practice.

The program provided valuable insights into current best practices and strengthened the clinical competencies of the faculty in managing complex tracheostomy-related dysphagia cases.
